Customer Identification Requirements

Before we can open a savings account for you, we are required by law to verify your name and address. We are also required to maintain up to date identification for all our customers. This means that we may require additional identification from time to time, even for customers who have held accounts with the Society for some time.

We will carry out an electronic search to verify your identity as the account holder(s). However if we are unable to verify your identity through an electronic search we will ask you to provide documents to verify your name and address as detailed below:

If you require any assistance please telephone us on 0161 923 8065.

Ideally if we cannot verify your identity electronically, we would like to see your Passport or Photo Card Driving Licence or Firearms Certificate containing a photograph if you have one. If you are local to our branch or one of our agencies, you could bring the original document so that we can take a copy. However, if you prefer, a certified copy* can be sent to our Head Office address.

*Certified Copies

By "Certified Copy", we mean a photocopy of the document which has been seen by a professional person** and certified accordingly. The person signing the document should declare that the original has been seen, and provide their signature along with their contact details.

**Professional Person

By "Professional Person", we mean an Accountant, Bank/Building Society Official, Barrister, Company Director, Dentist, Doctor, Justice of the Peace, Officer of the Armed Services, Optician, Police Officer, Post Office Official, Solicitor, Teacher, or someone of similar standing in the community.

If you do not have a Passport, Photocard Driving Licence, or Firearms Certificate, we will require one document from List A and 1 document from List B below:

LIST A

LIST B
- Valid old style driving licence
- Entitlement to state or local authority benefit
- Entitlement to tax credit
- Entitlement to pension
- Entitlement to educational or other grant

- Current council tax demand letter or statement
- Utility bills (but not ones printed off the Internet)
- Current bank statements or credit / debit card statements issued by a regulated financial sector firm in the UK (but not ones printed off the Internet)

All documents should not be more than 12 months old except for the Driving Licence, which must be valid. If copies are produced, these must be certified by a professional person, as detailed above.

If you are unable to provide any of the documents detailed above, please telephone us on 0161 923 8065 to discuss alternative arrangements that may be possible. We will do all we can to find a suitable alternative to take account of your individual circumstances, however we regret that we cannot open an account without necessary identification.
